Yo! China's India Expansion Plans

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Yo! China - Chinese Fast Food Retail chain has announced an ambitious expansion plan to add 50 retail outlets by 2009, from existing 27 outlets.

Yo! China, MD, Ashish Kapur, said,
We are targeting youth and plan to setup wherever there is accessibility such as Central Business District, malls, Airports and Large Corporate and University Campuses. We will expand in North, South and West India.
Mr. Kapur is reasonable enough to avoid the Backward States of Eastern India. Yo! China is negotiating to open 4 outlets in Tech Parks, IT Campus / Corporate and Bangalore International Airport.

Yo! China faces competition from Mark Pi and Jumeriah Noodle House in India.

Mr Kapur's YO! China would not stand a chance in comparison to if not fully authentic Chinese food in the East, where the overall taste and texture of the dishes are a gazillion light years ahead that of YO! China's, especially in places like Shillong and Calcutta.
The fact of the matter is that in the fast food/family restaurant segment, YO! China's menu does not offer anything that the East is not experiencing and even better. The only USP for YC being more upscale joint than the vans and small roadside stir/fry joints dotted all over Delhi and NCR.

Just selling soups, fried rice and fried non-veg and veg dish and adding loads of cornflour, synthetic soy and vinegar with loads of ginger garlic and chillies does not cut it.

The fact of the matter is that Authentic Chinese cuisine is only the realm of the five star hotels with real Chinese chefs doling out their master creations such as Beijing cuisine, Shanghai cuisine, Szechwan cuisine, Cantonese cuisine. Ingredients used should be as authentic as possible.

My point is Mr. Kapur should visit one of the cities in the East preferably Shillong to experience the Chinese food there, maybe then he will find Yo! China's menu backward.
