Reliance Fresh lays off 1,000 employees
Wednesday, September 26, 2007
Our associate reports that there have been massive protests against the entry of Reliance Fresh in the lawless and highly corrupt states of Uttar Pradesh and Orissa.
Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is laying off 1,000 staff in Uttar Pradesh after failed attempts to reopen modern supermarkets, which closed after protests from small traders. The move by Uttar Pradesh state to shut 10 Reliance Fresh supermarkets was amid fears that millions of small shopkeepers and traders could lose their jobs.
In another setback for Reliance, around 15 stores in Noida and Ghaziabad, both in New Delhi, were shut over the last week on police orders, although staff there has not yet been sacked. This week, traders in eastern Orissa state ransacked two Reliance Fresh stores, forcing police to order their closure, one of several incidents in the last month across India.

Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of the Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Industries Limited, has sacked 400 staff in West Bengal due to its inability to start operations following stiff opposition from political parties and local traders.
dont u feel this is giving an indication to other regions and people who want to hamper the growth of such organised retail in the country.
traders all across india will start doing such activites to protect there business then what will happen to reliance and other global companies investment in the country.
it realy not accepted such activites were we live in democratic country like india, this polotics for there advantage
this is the worst step ,which our government have taken,as few of such steps will ceratinly throwing our economy backward....governement must think about it again,as reliance and many other groups are recruting thousands of emoployees...such things will definately damage the whole economy....
As a consumer, thats a most shocking news for me that our government have ordered reliance retails to shut down there stores,,i dont know why government is doing this,i m facing huge problems due to the closure of such stores,i m unable to purchase under a single roof,,i have to go to different shops to collect my daily needs..
