Reliance Fresh lays off 1,000 employees

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Our associate reports that there have been massive protests against the entry of Reliance Fresh in the lawless and highly corrupt states of Uttar Pradesh and Orissa.
Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is laying off 1,000 staff in Uttar Pradesh after failed attempts to reopen modern supermarkets, which closed after protests from small traders. The move by Uttar Pradesh state to shut 10 Reliance Fresh supermarkets was amid fears that millions of small shopkeepers and traders could lose their jobs.

In another setback for Reliance, around 15 stores in Noida and Ghaziabad, both in New Delhi, were shut over the last week on police orders, although staff there has not yet been sacked. This week, traders in eastern Orissa state ransacked two Reliance Fresh stores, forcing police to order their closure, one of several incidents in the last month across India.

Local Luxury Brands More Popular in India than Global Ones

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

When it comes to Luxury Retailing in India, localities prefer home grown brands rather than Global brands. Having seen neighbors going out to France or Europe for shopping in 90s and early 2000, this comes as a surprise to me as well.
Luxury Retailing in IndiaIn a survey conducted by American Time magazine, its is found that four out of the top five brands on the minds of young Indians - Park Avenue, Allen Solly, Reid and Taylor and Wills Lifestyle are domestic labels. Swiss watch Rolex is the only hot favorite amongst Indian men in the top five. However, Chinese and Russian counterparts prefer French and other western labels.

Most Indian women have vowed to preserve the Sari and other cultural and traditional dresses as Luxury wear.

The survey also tells that 58% of Indians prefer high quality, 55% go for high reputation and 50% for latest trends in fashion. So if you are an aspiring retailer in India, you know what Indians are looking for :-)

Reliance + Future group to convert private labels to Brands

Sunday, September 23, 2007

Future Brands, the fully owned subsidiary of Pantaloon Retail India Ltd is planning to convert its existing private label brands in Big Bazaar and other retail outlets into Big Retail Brands.
Mr. Desai, CMD of Future Brands said,
In the long term, the strategy is to move these private labels outside the company's own retail format as standalone brands. Consumers are currently not very familiar with our labels. We are looking to promote these labels and give them a big push forward through mainstream advertising. The idea is to build a strong consumer relationship and connect with the consumers.
Our retail analyst tracking future brands lists core private labels from Future Brand as John Miller Apparels, Bare jeans, Buffalo Denim, Tasty Treat Snacks, Dreamline [Home retailing] and Koryo [consumer durable]. These contribute 12% of group's retail sales ~ Rs 600 crore.

We have reliably learnt that, Future Group will set the ball rolling with John Miller this year. It also has plans to set standalone stores to market these brands.

In a separate development, Mukeash Ambani controlled Reliance Retail is looking for a global push in the fashion and lifestyle brands space. Reliance Retail has spun of a new company, Reliance Brands Pvt Ltd, which is looking for acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic alliances with international brands straddling the premium-to-luxury end of the market.

Saturday, September 22, 2007

MyDollarStore would be supplying the required merchandise, retailers and mall owners would be operating its stores and running customer care programmes on its behalf.
Mr Soumitra Ghosh, CEO of MyDollarstore said,
We are open to new formats for the Indian market. The mall owners and retailers could well be managing and operating while we would be earning commission from the business. At this stage we are looking at opportunities and wherever there are synergies with retailers and mall owners, we could consider having a shop-in-shop format for our brand of stores.
According to our survey, MyDollarStore has 47 standalone stores in 30 towns in India. Apart from high-street and malls, MyDollarStore has also moved in with the petrol stations and IT parks. They are also considering below-the-line advertising and planning some amount of interactive advertising across malls.

This Star Bazaar is 50,000 sft in size. Reliance's hypermarket in Ahmadabad is 165,000 sft in size :-) Star Bazaar is running a bakery and sell in-house labels of garments amongst the other things under this hypermarket.

Ms. Neeti Chopra, marketing Head said,
After much deliberation we have decided the brand name of our value apparel priced from Rs 99 onwards. Edward France Giovanni, Spike and Fashion Street are different categories of Men's wear while Navya is Indian wear and Tammy is kids wear. In-house labels are always profitable for the retail chain. We have also reliably learnt that, Trent is exploring the idea of venturing into Premium Brand retailing where margins are much higher. High entry costs and unrealistic real estate costs makes value retailing a complex problem.
